What is Diversion?
The
forthcoming now-open exhibition at Gallery North, Hailsham, promises to be as controversial as the subject it addresses.
The exhibition’s curator, Julie Ford, writes:
‘Diversion’ will explore artists’ reactions to the current transformation of the High Street, Hailsham, a project begun in late summer, 2016, and scheduled to end sometime in the spring of 2017. The scale of a production requiring removal of the road surface, kerbing, portions of sidewalks and reshaping and recovering the High Street and connecting George Street is matched only by a similar dismantling of nearby North Street in 2007 to make way for a Tesco superstore and car park.
‘Diversion’ derives its name from the signs directing pedestrians and motorists through a maze of barriers and fencing bordering both the High Street and George Street.
‘Diversion’ at Gallery North opens February 4 and runs to March 18
